Organizing Your Storage Unit

TIPS TO ORGANIZE YOUR STORAGE UNIT
*Make a Plan: You will need to make a plan of how you want to arrange your boxes and/or furniture in your storage unit. Place your frequently used items towards the front of the unit so you won't have to dig!
*Easy Access: Make sure that your boxes are clearly labeled and stack them in a way so you can read each label. It would be a good idea to make an aisle between the boxes so you won't have to move everything out to find that "one" box.
*Furniture: Furniture will take up less space if you can take it apart. A table, for instance, will be easier to store if you take off the legs. Make sure you keep all of the screws and bolts where you can find them. I always put them in a zip lock bag and tape the bag to the underside of the table top. I do the same thing with hardware for bedding frames.
*Mirrors and large pictures: Store these standing up and never flat. For extra protection, place these items between your mattresses that are standing up.
*Space saving idea: Make sure you take advantage of the inside of your large furniture. For example, you can store boxes, pillows, etc. inside a tv cabinet, wardrobe, refrigerator, washing machine or stove.
*Store on top of pallets: If you place pallets on the ground before you put your boxes in, this may help prevent insects or rodents from getting into your boxes or even water damage.
*Put your heavy items on bottom: Put your heavy items on the bottom to prevent your boxes from being crushed. On the flip side, make sure your breakable items are put on the top or in a special location so nothing falls on them.
*Plastic containers: One way to help prevent mold and mildew would be to store your items in plastic containers. These will seal a lot better and won't get crushed like a cardboard box can. Clear containers are also great because you can see quickly what is in there.
*Plastic wrap: Wrap your furniture (especially couches, chairs and mattresses) in plastic wrap. This will help protect them from moisture and dirt. A good idea would be to contact your local furniture or mattress store and see if they will save you the big plastic bags that new mattresses come in. These are normally a thicker plastic that won't rip easily.
Good luck with your move!!!
